Passers-by of the new Elyria High School site will notice the walls getting taller and the campus getting broader as work continues over the summer months. The attached vocational building on 5th Street that once housed special education rooms and offices is being demolished to make way for the new athletic complex. The Washington Building still stands ready to serve students this coming school year but will begin to see clean-up to the stone facade at the West peak and roofing work this summer. Heavy Masonry and concrete work continues on the new academic wing bordered by Middle Avenue, West Avenue and 7th Street.
A color committee has been assembled to plan interior brick, mortar, flooring and carpet colors. Soon the district will make decisions on loose furnishings, including student desks and tables, and technology packages.
Students will move into the new academic wing in the fall of 2010 and the entire campus is slated for completion in 2011-2012.

A Look Ahead
With the ground thaw and temperature warm up that comes with spring and summer, work on the new Elyria High School is progressing at record speeds. All below grade masonry work is complete and work continues on the masonry walls of the new athletic facility and academic wing. Here's what you can look forward to in June and July: masonry work continues on the athletic facility, academic wing and auditorium; below-slab electrical work for the auditorium, poured concrete slabs in the academic wing and auditorium, a new roof and skylight on the Washington Building; and further abatement and demolition of existing structures.

Up, Up and Away!
Nearly two years after passing the bond issue for a new Elyria High
School the district will see the first signs of upward building this week.
It’s been a massive undertaking of underground infrastructure work
to ready the site for a building of this magnitude but all signs are now
pointing to go. Masonry contractors will begin layering concrete block

Inside the New EHS: Cafeteria with Washington Building View
Architects gave members of the Elyria Board of Education their first peek inside the new Elyria High School at a board meeting held Wednesday, February 11, 2009.
Architectural renderings to this point have displayed the building's dramatic exterior features, from its gabled roof and rose-tinted brick to its historic arched courtyard entrance and stately stone facade of a renovated Washington Building.
Now, Architectural Vision Group has opened the doors and is taking us inside the new structure with visuals of some of the student areas, including the cafeteria, music room, gymnasium and auditorium and athletic corridors. The illustrations give us a taste of what's to come but aren't meant to be exact replicas of a finished product. Indeed, finishings, such as paint and tile colors, furnishings, lighting and the like, will not be decided until the final stages of the project.
No matter, the interior renderings give us something to imagine. Take your own peek inside by clicking here. PATIENCE ADVISORY! This powerpoint file is large and may take a while to download. Downloading is recommended.

Contractors Get the Scoop on New EHS at Bidder's Interest Meeting
Don't let the lag time between postings on this site make you think that there hasn't been anything going on with the new Elyria High School. On the contrary, the work has been quite extensive and is truly the foundation for the new 300,000+ square-foot facility that will be the new Elyria High School.
The project is nearing the end of the Construction Documents Phase and will soon move into full-fledged construction.
Over the many months, work has been steadily progressing and many projects have been completed, including the new West Avenue Parking Lot and the geothermal well field, an intricate pattern of underground pipes that snake across the campus and create the energy-efficient heating and cooling system for the new building.
The new Elyria High School will be a sight to behold and the fun is about to begin. Today, a meeting was held to bring interested contractors up to speed on the scope of the project. Numerous packages will be up for bid in the near future, including general trades, masonry, roofing, Terrazzo tile, fire protection, HVAC, electrical, technology, furniture, casework/millwork, kitchen equipment, landscaping, and others. Interested parties should contact Scott Wagner, Project Manager, Regency Construction Services Inc., (216) 529-1188.

What a View! New Cameras Added to EHS
New cameras mounted on the exterior of Elyria High School will offer additional views of the construction site. The newest camera sits high atop the Washington Building and offers a look at the preliminary site work along Middle Avenue in preparation for geothermal drilling. The area in front of the Washington Building is one of three sites for geothermal well fields, others are located along Seventh Street and West Avenue. Initially, two drilling rigs will set up and drill six days per week, Monday through Saturday, beginning early July. As many as three rigs may be on site at any one time in the coming months. The rigs will drill nearly 300 wells, each at 500 feet deep. Each rig is capable of drilling 1.5 to 2 wells per day. The drilling and geothermal site work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, work continues on the West Avenue parking lot and a new camera soon to be mounted on the current auditorium will do a good capturing the action. All told, five cameras will be affixed to the current high school and record in real-time, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. To be part of the fun, click the live video feed link at the left of this page. Enjoy the view!
