Making Way for a New Elyria High

The first physical signs of a new Elyria High School came a few months ago with the toppling of the old, vacant pizza shop on the corner of 6th Street and Middle Avenue (adjacent to the Washington Building).

Now the demolition really begins. Today contractors began clearing the land along Middle Avenue, between Sixth and Seventh Streets. The next couple of weeks will see demo work continue until the site expansion area (between Sixth and Seventh Streets and West and Middle Avenues) is clear.

The house pictured in the attached photos faces Middle Avenue, between Sixth and Seventh Streets. The view shows demolition beginning from the backside of the house and moving toward Middle Avenue.

To see the action in real-time, check out the live video feed from this site, where four cameras fixed high atop the Washington Building capture much of the new construction site.

Stay tuned to Channel 98 for regular updates on the new Elyria High School.

How can a resident find out the findings of the drilling project?

Thank you for your question. The drill testing went well and it was determined that the site is suitable for a geothermal heating system. Currently, mechanical engineers are calculating the depth and quantity of wells necessary to support a geothermal system for the new high school.

For details of how a geothermal system works and more information on the conductivity findings specific to Elyria High School, check out the EHS video updates on this website. Thanks again for writing!
