GROUNDBREAKING SET FOR NEW EHS!

Before the snow begins to fly, join us as we break ground for a new Elyria High School on Monday, October 15, 2007, 5:30 p.m., at the corner of 6th Street and Middle Avenue (adjacent to the Washington Building). The ceremony will be followed by an informal reception with refreshments in the Elyria High School cafeteria.

The groundbreaking signals a very visual phase of the high school project. Until now, most of the work has been behind the scenes. Very soon, the land will be cleared and the dust will fly as the heavy construction work begins.

Currently, the District has purchased nearly all of the properties in the acquisition area between 6th and 7th Streets and Middle and West Avenues, and these home sites are undergoing environmental testing. The Board recently approved professional services for geothermal conductivity testing, land surveying and laser survey scanning of the current high school buildings.

In addition, Elyria-based J.L. Reichert Paving has been hired for demolition services on the land-acquisition site. Demo will commence as soon as the environmental testing is complete, which will likely wrap up sometime in October.

The Program of Requirements (POR), the initial phase of development, has come to a close and we are moving into a new phase called Schematic Design. During this phase, we will begin to see two-dimensional bubble drawings showing tentative placement of buildings and classroom spaces. Drawings at this stage are approximately 30% complete. As we move forward in the Design process, the drawings will begin to show walls, windows and elevations. Each phase of development takes approximately two to three months. Following the Schematic Design Phase is Design Development and Construction Documents.

Very soon, the District, Regency Construction and Architectural Vision Group will begin a series of community-engagement sessions to offer updates on the high school project, and an opportunity for questions and answers. Currently, Regency and AVG provide updates to the Board on the first Wednesday of every month at the regularly scheduled Board of Education Meetings. At that time, the floor is opened up for questions. We encourage you to attend and take advantage of this terrific opportunity to learn more and have your questions answered. If you are unable to attend, the Board meetings are broadcast daily on Time Warner Channel 98 at 2 and 7 p.m. Additionally, the EHS updates are broadcast separately at 11a and 11p.

Again, we hope that you will join us at the corner of 6th St. and Middle Ave. on October 15th for the groundbreaking ceremony and reception to follow. If you have questions or need more information, please contact, Amy Kren, Communications Coordinator, Elyria City Schools, (440) 284-8183, or e-mail krenamy@elyriaschools.org.

Hope to see you there!
